DIY Backyard Oasis: Dry Creek Beds

Let’s be real—drainage problems suck. Whether your yard turns into a swamp after rain or your patio ends up underwater, it’s time to fix that mess and look good doing it. A dry creek bed is a great DIY project that’s as functional as it is beautiful. Bonus? It’s way easier than it looks.

Here's how I did mine, step-by-step—with Lake Superior clay, a ton of rocks, and a whole lot of stubbornness.

Why Build a Dry Creek Bed?

Because:

You’re sick of soggy spots.

You want to guide water runoff safely away from your house.

You love the look of natural stone features.

It’s cheaper than installing French drains or digging up half your yard.

It gives your backyard awesome vibes.

🛠What You’ll Need

Shovel, rake, gloves, and a stubborn back.

Wheelbarrow (unless you want to carry rocks one at a time like I did for the first hour).

A mix of rocks:

Ugly ones for the base (think leftover landscaping rocks or busted chunks).

Nicer ones for the top and edges (river rock, Lake Superior stones, granite, etc.).

Optional: sand or clay for lining.

Optional: landscape fabric to keep weeds from laughing in your face next season.

Step-by-Step Instructions (with Tips)

Step 1: Scout the Flow & Dig the Trench

Find out where the water naturally wants to go. Mine was pretty obvious—straight toward my patio like it was magnetized.
Mark out a trench in that path and start digging.

Aim for about 12–18 inches deep and make the middle lower than the edges.

Curves look more natural than straight lines.

Don’t overthink it—it’s not surgery, it’s a ditch.

Step 2: Line the Trench (Optional but Smart)

Here’s where I got creative and used...Read More

Stones with Intention: Creating Your Own Pocket Talismans

Because sometimes the smallest things carry the most meaning.

There’s something deeply comforting about holding a stone in your hand—a weighty little piece of the Earth, worn smooth by time. It grounds you. Reminds you to breathe. Maybe you keep one in your bag, your pocket, or tucked inside your desk drawer. But have you ever made a stone yours—truly personal and intentional?

Creating a pocket talisman is about more than picking a pretty rock. It’s about slowing down and choosing something that speaks to you. It’s a quiet ritual of connection—between yourself, the natural world, and whatever energy or meaning you wish to carry with you.

Step 1: Choose Your Stone

Look for something that feels right in your hand. Maybe it’s a Lake Superior stone from a favorite trip, a heart-shaped jasper, or a piece with a unique line or texture. Don’t overthink it—go with what draws your attention.

💡 Tip: Rough textures can remind us to stay strong; smooth stones may offer calm.

Step 2: Cleanse & Clear

Before setting any intention, give your stone a fresh start. You can:

Rinse it under cool water

Leave it in sunlight or moonlight for a few...Read More

Your garden isn’t just a patch of dirt—it’s a story waiting to be told. Decorative stones are a subtle, beautiful way to bring intention and personality into your outdoor (or indoor) space.

Main Points:

Ideas: Line a pathway, accent a potted plant, use in fairy gardens or memorial spaces.

Indoors: Use in Zen bowls, on window sills, or in intention jars.

Bonus idea: Gift them with a handwritten note for a personal touch.

Closing:
A small stone can do more than decorate—it can inspire, ground, and uplift. Let your creativity flow!
